Home is a feeling, a state of mind, a place where you feel safe from the outside world. Your home is an extension of who you truly are. It reflects your emotions and your soul.

Out of the woods

By Denise Deveau

Reclaimed wood furniture is growing in popularity. It's beautiful, unique and should be the real deal...

Choosing furniture is as much an art as it is a science. For some it’s finding those special pieces that integrate seamlessly with a decor – from the pristine minimalist monochrome look to the eclectic appeal of rustic chic.

A universal element in just about any given environment is the wow factor that wooden furniture can bring to the picture. Add to that a reclaimed wood element, and you have a winning formula for some show stopping conversation pieces.

Reclaimed wood furnishings take on many guises, from elaborate live edge pieces created from salvaged trees; to barn board tables and shelves finished to perfection; to repurposed doors, beams and benches retrieved from demolished buildings and homes.

Sandra Rowe of Interior Concepts believes the growing interest in custom reclaimed furniture is a result of people’s desire to get back to nature and express their artistic side.

“They want something natural, but want something different as well,” says Rowe, a consultant with the interior design firm based in Exeter, Ont., about 200 kilometres west of Toronto.
